Meanwhile, next door, the Elf Wars were in full swing. Tinklebell, as Noel had dubbed Avril, had been outside all day, chatting to punters, doing little elf dances and selling the little cuddly elves faster than Noel could have a hope of keeping up with. She was really getting people into the shop with her sheer enthusiasm, and things were building up nicely with customers, all telling Noel how lovely his shop was, and how good his shop assistant was outside. At one point, Avril had even produced a skateboard from her backpack and started doing tricks outside! Someone came with an empty paper coffee cup, and people were throwing change into it like she was a street performer. Noel worried about the police at one point, as a pair of local officers came up and seemed to take an interest, but then a couple of minutes later, by the time Noel had served his customer and dashed outside to explain that she wasn't some mad illegal busker, she saw one of the officers whizz past on the board, whilst the other was buying four elves for his grandkids. It was then that Noel not only threw in the towel of the competition, but he also rang his supplier to order two more boxes of the elves. They were nearly wiped out, and the day wasn’t even over.

Noel used the quiet times in the shop to answer his emails, and he noticed one from a charity that he often worked for, asking him for his availability in the new year. They were looking to set up another village project, this time a school for children affected by the recent natural disasters that had ravaged the country. Normally, he would jump at the chance to be gone for three months, possibly longer, but now things seemed so different. Thinking of leaving Summer for that long left a bitter taste in his mouth, a clench in the pit of his stomach. Could he put down roots here? He couldn't live in a B & B forever, that was for sure, and he thought of his mother's plea for him to visit home, start his life. The thing was, he always thought he was living his life, but now he had something tangible, something new, and he didn't want to cut that short. The truth was, he wanted to spend all his time with Summer. And then there was Avril. What about her? He had been toying with the idea of offering more long term work in the holidays, but how would that even work? Was she a project for him? For that matter, was Summer? She hadn't given him the easiest of starts in Bridlington, but he knew in his heart that her issues were the reasons for her aloofness. The putty that kept her walls up and strong. He could see through the cracks in those walls now though, and he wanted to keep knocking them down. Eugh. He was doing his own head in now with his metaphors.
